During the outdoor off-season from late April to late August each year, Indoor Carpet Bowls is played at the Club. This is a great opportunity for many people to make the most of the winter months instead of being cooped up at home, often alone. Carpet bowls provides the opportunity of meeting others in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and enjoying some good fun and competition, whilst also having some much needed social contact.
As the name suggests Indoor Carpet Bowls is played indoors and on long green felt carpet. The carpet is approximately 6 feet (1.83 metres) wide and 30 feet (9.14 metres) long. Much smaller biased bowls are used than those used for lawn bowls. The objective of the game is to position your bowls closer to the “jack” than your opponent. Rules for Indoor Carpet Bowls are very similar to those of lawn bowls, with one key exception being that players can score additional points, called penalties, for knocking the jack off the mat when delivering their bowl.
Trafalgar Bowls Club ladies compete in the Latrobe Valley Ladies’ Indoor Bowls Association indoor pennant competition. Two teams each of four players take part in inter-club competition on Monday afternoons over a 14-week season and games are played both at Trafalgar and away at other participating clubs. Social games and pennant practice are played on Tuesday afternoons.
It is not necessary to be a lawn bowler to take part in carpet bowls. Indoor carpet bowls is a challenging game and attracts a close following. Come along and enjoy to this social event.
